Gulaga’s contribution to closing the gap

At Gulaga Services, we are actively closing the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. While our focus is on training, employment and employee retention, we know these improvements will have ripple effects on other areas of disparity including health, safety, family and community, wellbeing and incarceration.

We proudly support Aboriginal procurement and training by upskilling and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team members, and we are guided by our current Reconciliation Action Plan – Innovate.

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap outlines 19 key socioeconomic targets that aim to improve life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and combat inequality. It is the result of a genuine partnership between Australian governments and the Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peak Organisations (the Coalition of Peaks).

Some of the targeted outcomes include: children being born healthy and strong, students achieving their full learning potential, youth actively engaging in education or employment, people securing appropriate and affordable housing, no overrepresentation in the criminal justice system, strong economic participation, and families enjoying social and emotional wellbeing.

How Gulaga is helping

One of the most crucial factors in improving overall socio-economic status and standard of living is having gainful employment. Economic empowerment and financial independence lead to a greater quality of life. And this leads to improved health outcomes and social and political participation.

In addition to construction and workforce solutions, Gulaga Services provides social services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their communities. We holistically support the Commonwealth Government’s national priority to bridge the employment gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

Our social services include mentoring, upskilling and pre-employment training. Through our strategically designed, high-impact programs, candidates are prepared and job-ready for a specific role or industry. When candidates are prepared, they’re more likely to flourish and succeed in the long term.

A school-based traineeship

In addition, we offer a well-designed School Based Traineeship program that has proven effective in building a strong foundation for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our talent specialists collaborate with our cultural liaison officers to tailor a learning plan for the personal and professional growth of each trainee, enabling them to make a smooth transition from school to the workforce.

The social impacts of our traineeship program extend well beyond the development of the individual participant by positively affecting families, communities and the wider society.

Empowering the future

At Gulaga Services, our reconciliation vision is to build vibrant, connected communities that involve all Australians. We are committed to creating genuine opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and advocating for their right to equal prospects for education, health, employment and business.

Gulaga Services is proudly Aboriginal owned, and we will continue our work on closing the gap for as long as it takes to create one country, one people.
